Including a shortcode on the package of a consumer product is a simple and effective way to drive sales via with a simple contest or sweepstakes.  Shortcodes allow shoppers to enter such a contest immediately and on-site, with minimal effort or confusion. Consumers could text in a key word to the advertised shortcode, opt-in to enter the sweeps, and choose whether or not they would like to receive future alerts from the brand hosting the sweepstakes.  Alternatively, an on-pack “call to action” featuring a shortcode could also drive traffic to the brand’s website by supplying shoppers who text in to that shortcode with a prize that is redeemable on the website only. For example, a shopper might receive a text message with a winning “code” that must be entered on the brand’s website in order for the customer to learn what he/she has actually won.

Point-of-Purchase promotions, whereby a shopper is alerted to a special offer from the brand while shopping in a retail location, allow marketers to reach the consumer while he/she is actually making purchasing decisions-a crucial moment for brands in terms of customer acquisition and loyalty.  Endcap or shelf materials, such as print ads (posters, shelf-talkers, etc.) or interactive materials (LCD screens, kiosks) can offer shoppers the chance to connect with the brand on a more personal level by actually interacting with the promotional materials.  For example, an LCD screen might flash /images/ipsh/ of a grocery product in use while a shopper browses through a large supermarket.  The shopper can stop momentarily at the screen, and follow directions to text in to a given shortcode for more information, recipes, a chance to win a special prize, etc.  A response SMS message from the brand might even contain a link to a branded WAP page that allows the consumer to receive more detailed information regarding that particular product and its benefits.
